He played first international match of his career in 1992 against West Indies but he was not able to perform well as he managed to make only 3 runs.

While playing the same series, partnership of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly contributed 255 runs and this became the highest partnership of that time for India against any country, outside India.
Amazing performance of Ganguly made him rising star of cricket world. He gained lot of fame after achieving such records in the series.
In 1999 World Cup while playing against Sri Lanka, Ganguly smashed 183 runs in 158 balls with the help of 17 fours and 7 sixes. Performing extremely well he registered second highest score in history of World Cup as well as highest score by an India in World Cup at that time.
His ferocity and energy made him one of the most popular cricketers of that time.
In 2000, Ganguly got the opportunity to become captain and he worked as a perfect leader. Under his leadership, team India reached the final of the World Cup in 2003. Ganguly registered the record of being most successful Indian Test captain overseas as team India won 11 matches out of 28 under his leadership.
In 2005, he was dropped as the captain of the team because of poor performance and disputes with former coach of team India, Greg Chappell.
However, he made comeback and again performed tremendously well.
Although he took retirement, but he is still vital part of cricket world.
He worked as President of the Cricket association of Bengal from 2015 to 2019.
In October, 2019 he was assigned a big responsibility as he became President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
