19 cricketers were handed the contracts and they were divided into three different categories – A, B, and C.

Harmanpreet Kaur, Poonam Yadav and Smriti Mandhana were placed in the top category earning Rs 50 lakh.

Shafali Verma was promoted from Category C to Category B. Overall list of category was trimmed from 22 cricketers to 19 cricketers.

Veda Krishnamurthy Anuja Patil , Ekta Bisht  and Dayalan Hemalatha were amongst dropped. Richa Ghosh is included in the contract list for the first time.

Women cricketers placed in category B earn Rs 30 lakh and in C category get Rs 10 lakh.

But, Men’s cricketers are divided in total 4 categories. Category A cricketers get a whopping Rs 7 crore. Category C players get Rs 1 crore.

There is a big difference in salaries of Men’s and Women’s cricketers but this has not happened for the first time. However this time fans of women’s cricketers have highlighted this matter on social media.

After releasing of the list of contracted players by BCCI, Twitterati expressed its disappointment over the huge difference between salaries of both. Fans expressed their feeling for Women cricketers as they play for the nation and deserve equal payment. Thus,BCCI is accused of gender bias.

BCCI was also criticised as flights for Women cricketers was not arranged. It was reported that BCCI has not done arrangement of any charter flights for Women cricketers for Mumbai ahead of England tour.

On the other hand, BCCI had done the arrangement of COVID tests. BCCI also did arrangement for charter flights for the squad of men’s cricketers, when they were picked for WTC Final and England tour.

India’s skippers, Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur have done the clarification regarding this matter. They stated that the BCCI is taking care of Women’s cricketers also.

They also stated that self-commuting was a choice of few players. The issue regarding the difference in salaries of Men’s and Women’s cricketers has been highlighted again. Fans are also taking potshots at BCCI.

BCCI is accused of gender bias because of payments to India Women cricketers and here are some of the tweets related to this:

Shocked that mithali and jhulan most experienced players in the team at 30L packages and only 3 women's for 50L packages (harmanpreet, smriti and poonam raut)

— Aditya (@Adityapatwal02) May 19, 2021

Not a respectful remuneration at all! Shameful, I would say. Request @KirenRijiju to look into this matter. Such a low salary amounts to gender bias, nothing else. Any logic in its favour would be utter nonsense.

Should be paid more. Women’s team deserve it. They reached ODI finals, T20 finals and are continuously putting in more efforts. @BCCI should consider the change @BCCIWomen

Only 50L ??? They deserve much better 😡 @BCCI @SGanguly99

— Suganya Murugan (@Suganyao3) May 19, 2021

Very very very less package…Double standard

— Rahul Patil 🇮🇳 (@PatilRahul94) May 19, 2021

Virat Kohli will be paid 14 times more than his counterpart Harmanpreet Kaur, though the men's team failed to qualify for finals in WC whereas the women's team reached finals.
There has been no significant pay rise in women's pay since arrival of Saurav Ganguly as President.
